THE BEST INVESTMENT
Howdy once again from Nacogdoches Texas where I’m on the 25th floor of the SYNCHRO ERP plaza. Actually, the tallest building around these parts are the Steen Hall dorms on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University, SFASU, my alma mater at ten stories. Garner Tower was razed a number of years ago and at fourteen stories tall, was actually the tallest building between Houston and Interstate 20, spanning about two-hundred miles.
I was reminded recently of the importance of training employees. I had gone to a local auto parts store to exchange a battery core for a new battery, 12volt deep cycle battery for my travel trailer. This auto parts store is actually part of a large national chain. A new computer system had been installed and basically, the employees, including the manager, had not received much if any training. The manager was struggling to find my account so I could get “credit” for the failure of the battery after less than a year and then once the account was finally located, entering the information was painful at best. The manager could not understand how to do a search by phone number and let me tell you, there are a lot of Allen’s in the national database! The computer monitor was turned in such a way I could see what he was doing, err should I say not doing. I ended up basically giving a training course to the manager and the employee on how to use the new computer system, a system I knew nothing about and had never seen before. The computer system was intuitive to me by pressing function keys, mouse clicking, and reading what was on the screen. After about fifteen minutes, I had everyone trained and my battery returned and received full credit and got a new battery at no charge! The manager and employee thanked me and gave me a token “gift” for my time and troubles. This certainly was NOT the fault of the manager or the employee, at the end of the day they know automotive-truck parts and how to fix and install things – more than I would ever know. These people could drop and rebuild a transmission on the side of a two lane road with a simple tool box where as I would be calling AAA. All the manager and employee needed was TRAINING.
If you haven’t figured it out, where I am going with this is that training is so critical to a business, any business and of course YOUR business. At SYNCHRO ERP, training our employees, staff, and our CUSTOMERS is critical to maintaining the outstanding software and support that we are known for. We want our customers to get as much out of the all module licensing system as they can because that is what it is all about. Training will streamline operations, get everyone moving in the right and same direction, insuring data is correct to avoid the mantra of garbage in and garbage out, and at the end of the day improve efficiency and save money if not make more money. Look at training in a new light of investing in the company and in the employee.
Until next time, see you on down the road.
